2-person tent buying guide
By Ostrall · Updated October 20, 2026
A "2-person" label says less than it seems: two tents with the same label can differ by a kilo or more and by 10 cm or more in floor width. Ostrall sorts that out, so you see the tents that fit how you camp, from overnight bushwalks to a weekend at a coastal campground.
What Ostrall asks to narrow it down
- Carried on a bushwalk, or car camping?
- Three seasons, or alpine and snow?
- Two doors, or one?
- Freestanding, or trekking-pole?
Floor size, not the label
Capacity ratings assume two standard sleeping mats side by side. Many 2-person tents are about 127 to 137 cm wide; at the narrow end, two wide mats overlap and packs live in the vestibule. Length and peak height vary too.
Trail weight and packed weight
Makers quote a minimum (trail) weight (inner, fly and poles) and a packed weight (everything in the bag). Hiking tents compete on grams; car-camping tents are usually roomier, tougher and cheaper for the same money.
Seasons, sun and heat
- 3-season tents cover most Australian camping: mesh inners for warm nights and enough strength for wind and rain.
- 4-season (alpine) tents are built for snow and strong wind in the high country: heavier and less airy.
Long days in strong sun are hard on fly fabric: makers list UV-treated or silicone-coated flies, and mesh panels and high vents matter more on hot nights than in cooler countries.
Single wall, double wall and trekking-pole tents
Double-wall tents (an inner plus a separate waterproof fly) handle condensation best. Single-wall tents are lighter and quicker to pitch. Trekking-pole tents use walking poles in place of tent poles to save weight.
Tents and swags
A swag is a different product: a canvas bedroll with its own mattress and a small tent-like cover, popular on 4WD trips and quick to set up. Double swags sleep two. They are heavier and bulkier than a 2-person tent and are not made for carrying on a walk.
Waterproof ratings and footprints
Waterproofing is quoted as a hydrostatic head in millimetres: higher resists more water pressure, and floors are usually rated higher than flies. Footprints (groundsheets) are often sold separately, so Ostrall compares delivered prices for what is actually in the box.
When prices move
Camping gear prices in Australia often drop around Click Frenzy, Black Friday, Boxing Day and the end of the financial year in June, and before the spring and summer camping season.
Let Ostrall find it
Search in your own words. Ostrall asks only the question your search leaves open, then shows the tents that fit, with today's prices in AUD (GST included), from stores such as BCF, Anaconda and Rebel, and a link straight to each store's product page.
Results come closest match first, then what is in stock, then the cheapest delivered price. No store pays to rank.
